Fellow Programme in Management (FPM)

IIM Kashipur's Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) is a full time residential doctoral programme designed to address the academic and research needs of professionals. The main objective of the programme is to provide scholars with necessary skills to identify and research complex issues in the field of management. FPM seeks candidates with outstanding academic backgrounds, intellectual curiosity and discipline needed to make scholarly contribution. The programme is committed to train individuals to excel in their area of research through publication of quality work of international standard.

The objectives of the programme are:

  • To encourage scholars to carry out research in the field of management, leading to publication in internationally reputed research journals and finding solutions of real world management problems.
  • To equip scholars with necessary understanding and skills to identify and research on complex issues in the field of management.
  • To develop expertise among prospective scholars for careers in management research and teaching and thereby to address the shortage of high quality management faculty in the country.

FPM (Ph D) Admission Result 2019

The programme consists of three stages:

  1. Coursework
  2. Comprehensive Exam and Viva Voce
  3. Thesis Work

Upon joining the programme, scholars will go through coursework in 6 terms spread across 2 academic years (Table 1). During this period an FPM candidate will complete 29 credit (2 credits of CIS to be incorporated) courses and one CIS/summer internship. One credit course involves 30 hours of class interaction.

* The FPM 1st year terms will be fully aligned with the timeline of PGP 1st year terms.

* There will be CIS/ Summer Internship in between 1st year and 2nd year of coursework.

* The program structure is subject to change.

Coursework of First Year

There is optimum mix of standardization and customization in the course work in the first year. It consists of a combination of general management overview (through PGP courses), FPM courses especially in base disciplines and FPM level research courses.

Courses in three terms in first year will consist of:

  1. Minimum 4 PGP first year core courses consisting of at least one area course if it is offered in the corresponding term (these courses are decided by area chairs in the area of specialization/interest in consultation with area members) in each of term I, II and III (FPM scholars will take these courses with PGP first year students)
  2. 1-2 FPM level compulsory research courses "Crafting Research Output" (term I) "Quantitative Research Methods" (Term II), and "Qualitative Research Methods" (Term III) for all scholars.

CIS / Summer Project

During the summer break at the end of the first year, a scholar will undertake a course of Independent Study or Summer Project on relevant theme under the supervision of a faculty member of the area of scholar’s research interest. CIS/Summer Project will be treated equivalent to 2 credit courses.

The candidates who have completed their PGDM from one of the IIMs with CGPA of 7 on a 10 point scale/3.0 on a 4.0 point scale or equivalent (passed in the preceding ten years period at the time of the application), are exempted from first year course. They will be given admission directly to the second year.

Coursework of Second Year

The second year of the programme is intended for acquiring in depth knowledge of the area of specialization and other related fields mainly through doctoral level courses. The scholars will have to complete 12 courses with 4 courses in each term. At least 6 of these courses will be from area of specialization/interest (primary area). Another 3 courses can be taken by scholars from cross disciplinary areas.

Qualifying CGPA

The qualifying CGPA at the end of first year (i.e. at the end of term III), at the end of CIS/Summer project and at the end of second year (i.e. at the end of term VI) should be at least 7.0 on a 10 point scale (A+: 10; A: 9; B+:8; B: 7 and so on). Scholars failing to meet the cut-off CGPA at the end of any of these mentioned three stages are required to withdraw from the programme. In addition, FPM scholars also need to maintain minimum GPA of 7.0 in the area level courses on an overall basis and maintain minimum GPA of 7.0 in the research methodology courses on an overall basis at the end of abovementioned three stages to continue in the programme. Scholars failing to qualify accordingly will not be allowed to sit in the comprehensive examination.

After successful completion of coursework of first two years, scholars take a CE (Comprehensive Examination) to be administered by the respective areas of specialization in third year.

Thesis Stage

After passing the comprehensive examination the scholar will start working on his/her FPM dissertation under the guidance of a Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC). The dissertation will be evaluated by a panel of experts from within and outside the Institute. The scholar also has to defend his/her thesis in a public defense in presence of panel of examiners.

Publication Requirements

The FPM scholar is required to publish/obtain written acceptance of at least two research papers in reputed peer reviewed journals (as validated by thesis advisory committee members) before he/she can be awarded the title 'Fellow of Indian Institute of Management Kashipur.

Programme Duration

Candidates are expected to submit their thesis in around four and a half years’ period from the date of initial registration. The maximum time allowed for completion of successful FPM thesis defense is six years from the date of initial registration.

Award of Title

Scholars, after completion of all the requirements of the programme, will be awarded the title 'Fellow of Indian Institute of Management Kashipur'.

Institutional Support

The institute will provide substantial infrastructural and financial support to FPM scholars.

The institute has a state-of-art learning resource center. The center has a collection of more than 7000 printed books and has subscribed a volume of online books and all the important online journals in the field of Management and other related disciplines from publishers and aggregators such as ABI / Inform Complete, EBSCO Business Source Complete, EBSCO Econlit, Elsevier (Science Direct), Emerald Management, Informs, JSTOR, Springer Link, Oxford University Press, Sage HSS Collection, Taylor and Francis, Wiley online journals etc.

The center has also subscribed corporate and economic data bases such as CMIE - EIS, IAS, Prowess, CRISINFAC, Euromonitor (Passport), Frost & Sullivan, Gartner, Indiastat.com, INSIGHT, MIMI (MICA), SCC Online etc. The Institute has 11 Bloomberg terminal.

No fee is charged for the FPM. Currently each scholar is given the financial support as follows:


Year 1: Rs 25,000 p.m.
Year 2: Rs 27,500 p.m.
Year 3: Rs 30,000 p.m.
Year 4: Rs 33,000 p.m.
Contingency grant : Rs 25,000 p.a.
Equipment grant : Rs 50,000 (one time)

Financial support is also provided for international and national conferences (as per FPM Policy). Each candidate is provided free residential accommodation in the hostel. The hostel mess run by the student body; for which the FPM scholars will have to contribute on pro-rata basis. For married participants additional amount of Rs. 5000/m will be reimbursed on production of rent receipt.

Eligibility Criteria;

Candidates for the programme must have one of the following qualifications obtained from any of the universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of parliament or declared to be deemed as a university under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India, or an equivalent qualification from an institution approved by AICTE.

  • A master's degree in any discipline with at least 60% marks or equivalent grade point average.


  • A professional qualification - CA/ICWA/CS with graduation degree.


  • 4 years / 8 semester bachelor's degree (B.E./B. Tech./B. Arch. etc.) with at least 6.5 CGPA or equivalent percentage.

Work experience in industry or academics (in reputed organizations), though not mandatory, will be given due credit in the selection process. The work experience as full-time executives or as management teachers in an organization/institution of repute is only considered as the valid experience.

Those who are appearing for their final year examination in the current academic year may also apply. However, their admission to the programme, if selected, will be provisional subject to their successful completion of all requirements for completing the relevant degree before 30 June 2019 (a letter needs to be obtained by the FPM scholar from the Head of the concerned Institution to this effect) and compulsorily producing the degree completion certificates by 31st December 2019 (satisfying all the eligibility criteria). The provisional admission of any such scholar (if any) subsequently failing to conform to all the stipulated admission eligibility criteria by 31st December 2019 will be summarily terminated and no further correspondence will be entertained (monthly scholarship and any other applicable grant w.e.f. July 2019 for these candidates will be released only if they clear all eligibility criteria by 31st December 2019).

Selection Process;

  1. The entire selection process focuses on comprehending an applicant's motivation and research capability. Interviews of shortlisted applicants allow the Institute to determine the candidates’ motivation for research. Candidates need to submit the relevant test scores along with application form. Only shortlisted applicants will be called for personal interview. The subsequent personal interview determines the academic preparation of the candidate for the specific area he/she has applied. An applicant can apply at most to two different areas of specialization.
  2. Applicants to take Common Admission Test (CAT) in 2018 or depending on chosen specializations, alternative test scores in lieu of the CAT score as specified below can be provided (these other tests must have been taken in preceding two years period on the date of application) :
    • Operations Management & Decision Sciences :CAT / GMAT / GRE / GATE/ UGC-JRF in relevant discipline
    • Organizational Behavior and HRM: CAT / GMAT / GRE / GATE/ UGC-JRF in relevant discipline
    • Accounting and Finance: CAT / GMAT / GRE / UGC-JRF in relevant discipline
    • Strategic Management: CAT/ GRE/ GMAT/UGC-JRF in any discipline in relevant discipline
    • Economics and Business Environment: CAT / GMAT / GRE/ UGC-JRF in relevant discipline
    • Communication: CAT / GMAT / GRE/ UGC-JRF in relevant discipline
  3. The personal interview of all the qualifying candidates will be conducted at IIM Kashipur on 4th April 2019.

Special Drive for SC/ST Candidates:

IIM Kashipur invites applications from SC/ST candidates for a Special Drive to nurture them for future faculty positions in IIMs. Selected candidates under this drive will be provided additional opportunities and remuneration to work as teaching assistants during the program.

However, IIM Kashipur will help in the booking process for accommodation at Kashipur at concessional rates if the Institute admission department (contact: Dr Vinay K Sharma) is individually contacted though actual board and lodging cost will be borne by the prospective candidate.
